Being Jobless: A Bummer or A Blessing?
76
You may be wondering, "Why is he asking this question?". Well, I've been jobless for almost a year and have very mixed feelings about this situation. On one hand, the insecurity and anxiety of living day to day without a job can be very stressful. But, the freedom of being able, within reason, to completely change my lifestyle is a challenge that excites me. There have definitely been good days and bad days but overall it's a tremendous opportunity to re-invent myself. I've been in the jewelry business for 20+ years, establishing and maintaining many great relationships over that time. People in the business have offered me several jobs but, my heart is screaming " time for a change". The possibilities are endless in this technological world we live in today. Nonetheless, every day of being jobless can be both a blessing and a bummer !
The Blessings
You would think that not having anything to do each day would drive a person insane. The beauty of waking each morning with no obligations is a godsend. No schedule. No appointments. No meetings. No commute. I determine how my time is spent. Of course, being a responsible human being, I am actively searching for employment or some sort of sustainable income. This mini sabbatical has taught me about what's important in my life. Its' not always about money, position or possessions. Independence and the ability to structure my time as I see fit is a revelation. Everyday is a new adventure. A blank canvas to create whatever life my heart desires. And,Hubpages has been a huge blessing. It lets me express in writing what I'm passionate about or just what's on my mind. Just having the ability to grow as a person in these troubled times is transforming. Being jobless , in a way, is a blessing!
The Bummers
Living day to day, on a very limited budget in this economy is stressful enough. Add trying to find employment to the equation and you have chaos emotionally. Rifling hundreds of resumes out online and not getting any response is frustrating and truthfully scary. Spending hour upon hour scouring job boards for something that matches your skill set is exhausting. Some days I just want to pull my hair out! That's why the idea of a home-based business is so attractive. But going online and encountering all the scams is unbelievable. Is there any hope? Your mind, as powerful a tool that it is, plays excruciating games with your imagination. Just trying to stay in the present can be a huge chore. I'm glad for little distractions like exercising or writing to release my anxieties. Thank goodness every day isn't this stressful. Realization that good things are in your future brings closure. And you just move on. More resumes, more disappointment. It's never ending cycle. OH MY GOD!
If I don't count my blessings each morning, this could lead to insanity. But, this experience is eye opening and really makes me appreciate everything I've got going for me. Being jobless, if approached with the right attitude can be a blessing! Amen.........

Join the world of the unemployed. I'm looking forward to reading more of your hubs on jewelry. Keep Hubbing, and Welcome!
Stay positive Jai. Hubpages is not only a great place to write your heart out, it's a great place to find inspiration, make new friends and who knows, even find the perfect job contact. Let people know about your talents and what path you wish to take.
Well, Jai. My financial situation is not the best right now either, but such is the case with many retirees like me. Finding even a part-time job in the field I've worked in for so long has proved to be difficult. Astounding. I hope things will look up for you soon and you'll find the job you seek.
Jai . .I too have been unemployed after working in the corporate world for so long .. and I must say that I have been enjoying every minute of my new lifestyle! No pressure no stress . ok so a limited budget.. that is a form of stress but I like this form better!!! And I like your positive take on it as well .. do positive things and positive things are sure to come our way!
You are very right Jai. It could be a bummer or a blessing in disguise. My hope for you is that you are in the right place at the right time. In a twinkle of an eye, you could be in a place where a great opportunity is placed infront of you, which would be worth your while. Life is full of surprises.
Also, a time like this is where a lot of Creative Ideas will come to your mind and you can "birth" them.
May the New year bring positive things your way. Keep Networking.
Best Wishes.
I couldn't agree more. Being unemployed is both exhilarating and scary. The former, because you feel like anything is possible now. The latter, because, as you so well said, you don't have a steady income. Now that I'm "semi-employed,'' it's crazy how busy I am. I think I work more NOW than when I was fully employed. All my unemployed and semi-employed friends agree. It's just that you now have to do everything yourself. You are your own marketing department, HR department, finance department, billing department, etc. It's a lot of work, but very satisfying, too.
Anything is possible. There are lots of people earning thousands by working from home and etc. Therefore being jobless can sometimes be a blessing.:) Very good hub here, if it means early retirement and being able to spend more time with the family, being self-employed can be such a good thing. Hub up, Jai.:)
Jai, I'm in the same boat as you. I feel a little guilty...a LOT guilty for admitting that at times...in times like these...it can be a blessing. I have to count my blessings each day as well. I owe so much to friends and family. Keep pushing on! I tell myself amongst the online scams AND outside scams. Sometimes it seems/feels like everyone is out for themselves. I have certainly become humble in the past couple of years. I do agree that thanks to exercise and writing and whatever other creative release I jump into has saved me from insanity.
I hear you brother, I lost my business ohhh about three years ago now, I ran and co-owned a custom homes company that went belly up during the housing fall. I knew it was coming to an end and kept telling my partner we needed to bail. They would not hear of it, I did manage to steer the company to closing without bankruptcy and yet all the same was left without a job and having had been in that industry, working for myself, left me with what I found to be little job opportunities.
The hardest thing was to face the available jobs with a fraction of the income and becoming a slave to a schedule to boot. I’ve been staying the course of freelance writer and the struggles you speak of I relate to completely. This I’ve learned, it’s far better to be at peace, free and open to options that just may lay in wait around the corner than to sell myself out to something or for something I feel no connection to just for a paycheck. Lastly, I’ve learned I spent a lot of money on a lot of things I did not nor do not need. I’m happy to have learned that lesson and look at each day differently and more effectively.
Here’s to peace, freedom and the pursuit of happiness on our own terms!
You are most welcome Jai. Think outside the box can be a real good thing in order to achieve more. Like this hub much.
Hi, somehow I agree with katiem2, where she said that selling out our selve in the market, and following the schedule of a company in order to get a paycheck according to what we had perform is very exhausted, yet we have to love that job so we can doing it well. But being a jobless is indeed a blessing, especially when became a freelance writer online full time, we can actually earn more by our hard works and I believe that if we give our full commitment to it, we can live stable by just working online; from people's testimonies who are success doing online usually can earn higher as $30,000 per month, and that is really incredible.
Jai, I am too out of work. I am 53 and its hard out there for someone my age to get a job. That is why I am here. I have a lot to learn.
Katie has a great blog. You will find a lot of help there. Just go to her hub and click on her link for her blog. I have it bookmarked and when I get a little better about writing I am going to use her blog to get started.
There are many free places to write for and make money. When you are ready join them.
Here is a link I have and it has helped others. There you may find something to help make some extra money to hold you over.
I understand the plight of being at home and jobless...been there!
However, I fail to understand the mindset we humans have...we crave to do things "IF"/"When" we have time and then when we do get time (jobless, for instance) we start to get all panicky and sweaty..
hang in there Jai Warren, something special is gonna come your way. Destiny has it's own way of showing us things!!
Good luck!!

Take heart - the right thing will come up for you. I can understand that it must be a stressful thing but it sounds like you have got a good perspective on it and in the long run you will look back and feel pleased that things turned out like this. In the meantime keep writing as your hubs are great reading!
